[The Korea Field 제1호, 1901년 11월] 두 번의 시골 여행

Two Country Trips.

 

As last year, I have been privileged to make two country trips with Mr. Hunt. The first one, early in the fall, of 55 days, was mostly spent at Anak, Where a class was held for ten days, women coming from different villages. There was an enrollment of 24 and a daily attendance of 18. As there was no keeper at the Anak house, the women appointed one from their number to prepare the food, she paying her board in this way. The others who did not bring rice paid in cash for their board. The face of an old woman who came to us while there I shall not soon forget. She had heard the gospel from some one who had stopped at her village. She wanted to hear mor, and was told if she would go to Anak there were believers there who would teach her. Though 80 years old and somewhat deaf, the persistency whit which she learned to read was interesting to see. She seemed oblivious to cold and hunger, for she would sit on the porch, with the cold fall winds blowing on her, spelling out the words, calling on those who passed in and out the door to help her, and had to be reminded that she must eat. Her mind was bent on learning about Jesus.

 

The other trip, of three weeks, was made in April at Sa Ri Won. Though a busy time in the year, yet the women came for study. Among those who came two were deserving especially of sympathy and Christian fellowship. One was a young wife, who was paralyzed in legs and arms. Her husband carried her on his back 13 miles that she might study. Though crippled in body, yet she has a very bright mind. She seems to have remembered all that she has ever studied. She tells of how, 3 years ago, she was helpless, unable to move either her stunted arms or club-footed legs, but that at that time she heard the gospel and was led to bllieve that by faith in Jusus she could be cured of her infirmity : and now, a woman who feeds upon God’s Word, leads a life of paryer and witnessing for her Savior, is so far cured of her bodily deformity that she is enabled to do the lighter portions of housework. The other woman, an aged mother, the only believer in the village, because she believes, has been refused support by her relatives. But she continues faithful, and because of the earnestness two men came, inquiring more about the gospel, from that village.

두 번의 시골 여행

 

작년과 마찬가지로, 저는 헌트 씨와 함께 두 번의 시골 여행을 할 수 있는 특권을 누렸습니다. 첫 번째 여행은 가을 초기에 55일 동안 진행되었으며, 대부분 아낙(Anak)에서 보냈습니다. 이곳에서는 10일 동안 수업이 열렸고, 여러 마을에서 여성들이 모였습니다. 등록 인원은 24명, 매일 출석 인원은 18명이었습니다. 아낙 집에 관리인이 없어서 여성들 중 한 명이 음식을 준비하기 위해 선출되었고, 그녀는 그 방법으로 자신의 숙식을 해결했습니다. 쌀을 가져오지 않은 나머지 여성들은 현금으로 숙식을 지불했습니다. 그곳에서 만난 한 노인의 얼굴은 쉽게 잊혀지지 않을 것 같습니다. 그녀는 자신의 마을에 들른 누군가에게 복음을 들었습니다. 더 배우고 싶어 그녀에게 아낙에 가면 믿는 사람들이 있다는 이야기를 들었습니다. 비록 80세이고 다소 귀가 먹었지만, 그녀가 읽기를 배우기 위해 보여준 끈기는 정말 인상적이었습니다. 그녀는 추위와 배고픔을 잊은 듯, 차가운 가을 바람이 불어오는 포치에 앉아 글자를 낱낱이 읽으며, 드나드는 사람들에게 도움을 요청했고, 식사를 해야 한다는 것을 상기시켜야 했습니다. 그녀의 마음은 예수님에 대해 배우는 데만 집중되어 있었습니다.

 

두 번째 여행은 4월에 사리원(Sa Ri Won)에서 3주 동안 이루어졌습니다. 바쁜 시기임에도 불구하고 여성들이 학습을 위해 모였습니다. 그 중 특히 동정과 기독교적 교제를 받을 만한 두 사람이 있었습니다. 한 사람은 팔과 다리가 마비된 젊은 아내였습니다. 그녀의 남편은 그녀가 공부할 수 있도록 13마일을 업고 갔습니다. 몸은 불구였지만, 그녀는 매우 똑똑한 마음을 가지고 있었습니다. 그녀는 자신이 배운 모든 것을 기억하고 있는 듯했습니다. 그녀는 3년 전, 무력한 상태에서 팔과 다리를 움직일 수 없었던 시절을 이야기합니다. 그러나 그때 복음을 듣고, 예수님에 대한 믿음으로 자신의 병이 치유될 것이라는 믿음을 가지게 되었다고 합니다. 이제 하나님의 말씀을 먹고 사는 여성은 기도와 구세주를 위한 증거의 삶을 살고 있으며, 신체적 결함이 상당히 개선되어 집안의 가벼운 일은 할 수 있게 되었습니다. 다른 여성은 마을에서 유일한 신자이자 나이 많은 어머니로, 그녀의 믿음 때문에 친척들로부터 지원을 거부당했습니다. 하지만 그녀는 변함없이 믿음을 지키고 있으며, 그 마을에서 두 남성이 복음에 대해 더 알아보려 찾아오기도 했습니다.
