CLASSES IN WHANG HAI PROVINCE.

 

AGAIN during January and February it was my privilege to spend five weeks in Whang Hai Do with Mr. Hunt. Here another feature of the work was presented : viz., the holding classes for the instruction of believers in Biblical truth. Theie were three classes held in as many different places. It was indeed encouraging and inspiring to see the zeal with which the people entered upon the study. Old men and young boys sat side by side and vied with each other in enthusiastic study. In one place we occupied a room in the church building separated from the public room by a thin partition. In the public room many of the members of the class slept at night. Nearly every morning we were awakened at about four o’clock by the voices of those who commenced their study at that early hour. Again in the evening the same process was kept up till about ten o’clock. Their principal topic of conversation, as indeed seems to be the case with our Christians everywhere, was the Bible and personal Christian experiences.

황해도에서의 수업

 

1월과 2월 동안, 저는 헌트 씨와 함께 황해도에서 5주를 보낼 수 있는 특권을 누렸습니다. 이곳에서는 신자들에게 성경 진리를 가르치는 수업이 진행되었습니다. 세 개의 장소에서 세 개의 수업이 열렸습니다. 사람들의 학습에 대한 열정과 헌신을 보는 것은 정말 격려가 되었고 감명을 주었습니다. 노인들과 어린 소년들이 나란히 앉아 열정적으로 학습하며 서로 경쟁하는 모습이 인상적이었습니다. 한 곳에서는 교회 건물의 한 방을 사용했으며, 그 방은 얇은 칸막이로 공개된 공간과 분리되어 있었습니다. 공개된 공간에서는 많은 수업 참여자들이 밤에 자곤 했습니다. 매일 아침 4시쯤이면 이른 시간에 학습을 시작하는 이들의 목소리에 깨어났습니다. 저녁에도 같은 방식으로 밤 10시까지 계속되었습니다. 그들의 주요 대화 주제는, 사실 우리 모든 기독교인들 사이에서 공통적으로 나타나는 것처럼, 성경과 개인적인 기독교 경험이었습니다.
