CHRISTIANS INCREASING LIKE LEAVES

 

TEN other counties, constituting the northeastern circuit, I hope to turn over to Mr. Bernheisel’s care just as soon as the mi.ssion will relieve me of it. It is a promising section, calling loudly for more attention, and will yield a rich harve.st. There are Christians in every county, with the possible exception of Maing San. When, with Mr. Ross and Mr. Bruen, I went up as far as Tek Chun last October we were surprised to find how widely the gospel had been proclaimed where no missionary had ever been. It was our privilege to establish 5 new groups in this region and to find isolated believers here and there in little nooks way up in the mountains. As one man after another, coming from the field or from a lonely cabin or some little valley, called out to us to stop and then announced himself as a Christian, Mr. Ross broke out with “Why! up this way the Christians seem to grow on every tree and bush.”

동북부 회로를 구성하는 다른 10개 군을, 선교회에서 저를 해방해 주는 즉시 번하이젤 씨의 책임으로 넘길 수 있기를 바랍니다. 이 지역은 많은 주의를 필요로 하며, 풍성한 수확을 가져올 가능성이 큽니다. 거의 모든 군에 기독교인이 있으며, 매잉산(Maing San)을 제외하고는 모든 군에 있습니다. 작년 10월 로스 씨와 브루엔 씨와 함께 텍춘(Tek Chun)까지 올라갔을 때, 우리가 한 번도 선교사가 없었던 곳에서 복음이 이렇게 널리 전파되었다는 사실에 놀랐습니다. 이 지역에 5개의 새로운 모임을 세울 수 있었고, 산속 구석구석에 고립된 신자들을 발견할 수 있었습니다. 한 사람씩, 외딴 오두막이나 작은 계곡에서 온 사람들이 우리에게 멈추라고 외치며 자신이 기독교인이라고 밝히자, 로스 씨는 “이런! 이쪽으로 오니 기독교인들이 나무와 덤불마다 자라는 것 같군요.”라고 말했습니다.
