FRUITS OF WOMEN’S WORK IN THE NORTH.

 

IN making this report I have mentioned numbers always not because I put trust in them, but because they help me to a little better understanding of a condition of affairs very difficult to describe. Not all who have attended the classes are what we would like to have them be. Some are weak and find it hard to live the new life : some are so ignorant that they hardly know why they have come to us : some are ambitious to gain a reputation for knowledge of the Bible : but most of them come together to study the Word of God because they know that in it are the words of eternal life and that it is the rule of their faith and practice. And in the quiet, heartsearching hours of study when they are thinking only of the message that God’s Word brings to them, the weak sometimes receive strength to overcome, the ignorant receive enlightenment, the ambitious have their pride broken and in its place a desire created to learn God’s will and to do it, and the sincere and humble-hearted receive comfort and power and a knowledge of God’s will that enables them more and more to enter into the higher life. It is worth while. The failures and weaknesses of some only serve to reveal more plainly the marvels of God’s grace in the characters and lives of others.

 

In comparing the work of this year with that of last year I have wondered where the advance might be. For one thing there has been an increase in the numbers of those enrolled, the highest attendance at any one time last year being 20 women, while this year the Whang Ju and Han Chun classes numbered 38 and 33. The Syen Chyen class, with its enrollment of 123, took its place by the side of the classes held here in Pyeng Yang. The number of those who can read is constantly growing. At every class the majority, if not all of the women have been able to take part in the reading. The women are growing in knowledge, asking more intelligent questions than they used to ask. T have noticed a difference too in the. way some of them present the truth to unbelievers. They seem to have lost some of the fervor of the earlier days, but none of the earnestness, and talk with much more intelligence and judgment. In habits of personal neatness and in the care and training of their children the change is beginning to come. Little by little the new ideas, so strange to them at first, are gaining a power over them, until now there are women who are filled with repentance after they have given a child a blow, and there are even those in wliom repentance has worked better things.

 

The Korean woman who has accompanied me on these trips is Pak Si, known to most of her friends as the “mother of Gannie.” Through all kinds of weather and in all sorts of places, some of them not at all comfortable, even from a Korean point of view, with an utter forgetfulness of self, in her love for the work she has always shown herself ready to do what she could. The women love her and listen to her. Her heart is in the work.

이 보고서를 작성하면서 숫자를 언급한 것은 그 숫자에 의존하기 위해서가 아니라, 상황을 조금 더 잘 이해하는 데 도움이 되기 때문입니다. 수업에 참석한 모든 사람이 우리가 원하는 모습은 아닙니다. 일부는 약해서 새로운 삶을 사는 것이 힘들고, 일부는 너무 무지하여 왜 우리에게 왔는지조차 잘 모르며, 일부는 성경 지식으로 명성을 얻고자 하는 야망을 품고 있습니다. 그러나 대부분은 하나님의 말씀을 연구하기 위해 모입니다. 그들은 그 안에 영생의 말씀이 있으며, 그것이 그들의 신앙과 실천의 기준이라는 것을 알고 있습니다. 조용하고 마음을 들여다보는 공부 시간에, 그들이 하나님의 말씀에서 전해지는 메시지만을 생각할 때, 약한 자는 극복할 힘을 얻고, 무지는 깨우침을 받고, 야망은 부서지며 하나님의 뜻을 배우고 행하고자 하는 열망이 생깁니다. 진실하고 겸손한 마음을 가진 이들은 위로와 능력, 그리고 하나님의 뜻에 대한 지식을 얻어 점점 더 높은 삶에 들어갈 수 있게 됩니다. 이는 가치가 있습니다. 일부의 실패와 약점은 다른 사람들의 삶과 인격 속에서 하나님의 은혜의 경이로움을 더욱 뚜렷하게 드러내는 역할을 합니다.

 

올해의 작업을 작년과 비교하면서, 어떤 진전을 이루었는지 궁금했습니다. 우선, 등록 인원이 증가했습니다. 작년 한 번에 참석한 최고 인원이 20명이었으나, 올해 황주(Whang Ju)와 한천(Han Chun) 클래스는 각각 38명과 33명이었습니다. 신천(Syen Chyen) 클래스는 123명의 등록으로 평양에서의 클래스와 나란히 그 자리를 차지했습니다. 읽을 수 있는 여성의 수는 지속적으로 증가하고 있습니다. 매 수업마다 대부분의 여성, 혹은 전부가 읽기에 참여할 수 있게 되었습니다. 여성들은 지식이 늘어나고 있으며, 예전보다 더 지적인 질문을 하고 있습니다. 그들이 불신자에게 진리를 전하는 방식에서도 변화가 있음을 느꼈습니다. 초기의 열정은 다소 잃었지만, 진지함은 여전하며, 훨씬 더 지혜롭고 판단력 있게 이야기합니다. 개인 위생 습관과 자녀 양육 및 교육에서도 변화가 시작되고 있습니다. 처음에는 낯선 새로운 아이디어가 점점 힘을 얻어가며, 이제는 자녀에게 매를 들고 후회하는 여성들도 있으며, 후회가 더 좋은 변화로 이어진 경우도 있습니다.

 

이 여행에 동행한 한국 여성은 박씨(Pak Si), 대부분의 친구들에게 “가니의 어머니”로 알려져 있습니다. 그녀는 다양한 날씨와 환경 속에서도, 한국의 관점에서도 전혀 편안하지 않은 곳에서도, 자아를 잊고, 일에 대한 사랑으로 항상 할 수 있는 일을 기꺼이 해왔습니다. 여성들은 그녀를 사랑하고, 그녀의 말을 잘 듣습니다. 그녀의 마음은 이 일에 있습니다.
