THE GIRLS’ NIGHT SCHOOL AT FUSAN.

 

IT is now almost five years since our little girls’ night school was started. It all came about wholly unplanned and almost uuthought of. Eleven little girls, none of whom were more then ten years of age, remained one Sunday night after a meeting of women at our home, and asked to be taught to read that they might be able to read the Bible for themselves. On an appointed evening ail came, a cold stormy night too, when I scarcely could expect them. Of this original eleven eight are still with me, two of whom have been baptized into the church, and the others we hope will be as soon as they are old enough to permit of admission.

 

During these years of happy association together we have won and lost many bright, promising girls by the removal to other parts of their parents, and this is, I think, one of the difficulties encountered in conducting a school on the present plan. We have never thought the plan ideal nor have we been altogether satisfied, yet perhaps under existing conditions it was the only thing to be done. But now the gospel is penetrating the hearts of more people, and not only Christian but heathen parents see an advantage in having their girls trained and taught. In the face of the disadvantages of not being able to control the girls in their home life, and of losing them at their most promising age, there is certainly something to be said to the credit of these faithful girls who have come to us so regularly. There has been no mercenary motive, positively nothing to be gained by them through their coming ; simply a pure motive of study and a desire to know about Jesus is all that has prompted them. Then too these girls all come from homes whose financial circumstances require the labor of these young hands during the day, so that study at night, with both mind and body tired, must be irksome, to say the least, more especially so during summer. I am told that among 26 children, representing nearly as many homes, there now isn’t one parent who objects to their coming to school, although half of these homes are still in heathendom.

 

During the year one of the girls, the oldest, was married to a young Christian merchant, the occasion being celebrated at our home with most all of our Christians present. Being the first Christian wedding our people had witnessed, it was looked upon by all with much interest. One girl about 17 years of age died at our home, where we had brought her only the day previous to her death for a change and a more comfortable place in which to spend her last days among us. Her testimony was a good one in the face of heathen home surroundings. Her mother has, since her daughter’s death, shown interest somewhat and has attended the church services and expresses a desire to “do the doctrine,” but cannot see her way clear yet to keep Sabbath because of poverty.”

부산의 소녀 야간 학교

 

우리의 작은 소녀 야간 학교가 시작된 지 거의 5년이 되었습니다. 이 모든 것은 전혀 계획되지 않았고 거의 생각하지도 않았던 일입니다. 한 주일 저녁, 우리 집에서 열린 여성 모임이 끝난 후, 열한 명의 어린 소녀들이 남아 성경을 스스로 읽을 수 있도록 가르쳐 달라고 요청했습니다. 정해진 저녁에 모두 모였고, 그날은 매우 추운 폭풍우가 치는 밤이어서 저는 그들이 올 것이라고 전혀 기대하지 못했습니다. 이 열한 명 중 여덟 명이 지금도 저와 함께하고 있으며, 그 중 두 명은 교회에 세례를 받았고, 나머지 두 명도 나이가 충분해지면 입회할 수 있기를 바랍니다.

 

이 행복한 시간을 함께 보내는 동안, 우리는 많은 밝고 유망한 소녀들을 부모의 이사로 인해 잃고 얻었습니다. 이는 현재의 계획으로 학교를 운영하는 데 있어 겪는 어려움 중 하나라고 생각합니다. 우리는 이 계획이 이상적이라고 생각하지 않았고, 전적으로 만족하지도 않았지만, 아마도 현재의 상황에서는 할 수 있는 유일한 방법이었을 것입니다. 그러나 이제 복음이 더 많은 사람들의 마음에 스며들고 있으며, 기독교인뿐만 아니라 이교도 부모들도 딸들을 교육하고 가르치는 것의 이점을 보고 있습니다. 가정에서의 생활을 통제할 수 없고, 가장 유망한 시기에 소녀들을 잃는 단점에도 불구하고, 이렇게 규칙적으로 우리에게 오는 이 성실한 소녀들을 생각하면 분명히 칭찬할 만한 일이 있습니다. 그들은 어떤 상업적 동기도 없었고, 그들이 오는 것에서 얻을 수 있는 것이 전혀 없었습니다. 오직 공부에 대한 순수한 동기와 예수님에 대해 알고자 하는 열망만이 그들을 움직였습니다. 또한 이 소녀들은 모두 경제적으로 어려운 가정에서 자라났기 때문에, 낮 동안 이 젊은 손이 필요한 상황에서 공부를 밤에 해야 하므로, 마음과 몸이 모두 피곤한 상태에서 공부하는 것은 적어도 여름철에는 불편할 것입니다. 26명의 어린이들 중, 거의 모든 가정을 대표하는데, 현재 학교에 오는 것에 반대하는 부모는 한 명도 없다고 합니다. 그 중 절반은 여전히 이교도입니다.

 

올해 가장 나이가 많은 소녀 중 한 명이 한 젊은 기독교 상인과 결혼하였고, 그 결혼식은 우리 집에서 기념되었으며, 거의 모든 기독교인들이 참석했습니다. 우리 지역의 사람들이 처음으로 본 기독교 결혼식이었기에 모두가 큰 관심을 가지고 지켜보았습니다. 약 17세의 한 소녀는 우리 집에서 세상을 떠났습니다. 우리는 그녀를 죽기 하루 전에 더 편안한 곳에서 마지막 나날을 보내기 위해 데려온 것이었습니다. 그녀의 증언은 이교도 가정 환경 속에서도 매우 좋은 것이었습니다. 그녀의 어머니는 딸의 죽음 이후 다소 관심을 보였고, 교회 예배에도 참석하며 “교리를 배우고 싶다”고 표현하였지만, 가난 때문에 안식일을 지킬 수 있는 길이 보이지 않는다고 합니다.
