CLIPPINGS FROM OCTOBER REPORTS.

Yi Si has had her heart full this year, as after eight years of praying and hoping her husband, who had stood out so defiantly against the truth, and who had compelled his son to tend shop on Sabbath, was on the Sabbath before Christmas received as a catechumen, and ever since has kept his store closed and regularly attended church. The son, then but 17 years of age, was one of the first group of inquirers gathered before the war. Through him the whole family has now been brought into the church. His grandfather, tho’ not baptized, died a Christian this year, and his wife and child were baptized.

In Suk Chun county the city church is the centre of strength, two of the helpers now residing there and the leaders being strong men. A good school lends activity to the group and a good building, made free of debt this year, provides for school and sarang and a church with accomodation for 150. One of the leaders of this church has been selected by the Board of Missions to become its first missionary.

In the ten trips of 86 days, all the time which I was able to spare from the city work, so much of the time was necessarily taken up with the urgent and important work of examination of candidates for baptism that too little time was left for instruction and for more thorough organization. I am eagerly looking forward to the division of my large territory, that I may more efficiently care for the northern circuit only. I have been able to provide for the administration of the Lord’s Supper in but six of the churches this year, a fact which I very deeply regret, as I find that the Communion service is always a means of grace greatly deepening spiritual convictions and strengthening faith.

It was a great pleasure to me to rercceive An the blind man as a catechumen. Three years ago he was excommunicated because of fall into grievous sin. He has had a hard struggle with himself, but now gives evidence of sincere repentance. I hope to restore him on my next visit.

The Cha Chak church, once so strong, has been almost obliterated by enforced removals, the gold miners practically driving the people from the neighborhood by confiscation of their fields for mining and of their homes for dwellings, no compensation being given. A small remnant of a dozen or so from other villages still meet in the church on Sabbath. Most of the people however have removed and inatu' of them are now in other churches.

In Yung You county the Kol Ouen group for the second time has set off a fine new colony established at Ha Sam with a small building and a good leader. Kol Ouen itself is now weak, but its colonies are growing.

숙천군(Suk Chun county)의 도심 교회는 힘의 중심으로, 두 명의 도우미가 그곳에 거주하며 지도자들이 강력한 인물들입니다. 훌륭한 학교가 이 그룹에 활력을 주고 있으며, 올해 부채가 없는 좋은 건물이 학교와 사랑방, 150명을 수용할 수 있는 교회를 제공합니다. 이 교회의 한 지도자는 선교부에 의해 첫 번째 선교사로 선발되었습니다.

86일 동안의 10차 여행 중, 도시 작업에서 할애할 수 있는 시간의 대부분이 세례 후보자들에 대한 긴급하고 중요한 검토 작업에 소요되어, 교육이나 더 철저한 조직을 위한 시간은 너무 적었습니다. 저는 제 큰 지역이 나뉘어 북부 순회만 효율적으로 돌볼 수 있기를 간절히 기대하고 있습니다. 올해 저는 6개의 교회에서만 성체성사를 진행할 수 있었던 점을 깊이 유감스럽게 생각합니다. 성체성사는 항상 은혜의 수단으로서 영적 확신을 깊게 하고 믿음을 강화하는 데 큰 도움이 되기 때문입니다.

눈먼 안(An) 씨를 교리 교육생으로 맞이하게 되어 큰 기쁨이었습니다. 그는 3년 전 심각한 죄를 저질러 출교된 적이 있습니다. 그가 스스로와 힘든 싸움을 해왔지만, 이제 진정한 회개의 증거를 보이고 있습니다. 다음 방문 때 그를 회복시키기를 희망합니다.

한때 매우 강했던 차착교회(Cha Chak church)는 강제 이주로 거의 사라져 버렸습니다. 금광 개발자들이 사람들을 농작물을 강제로 압수하고 집을 빼앗아 지역에서 쫓아냈기 때문입니다. 작은 남은 무리는 여전히 주일마다 교회에 모이고 있지만, 대부분의 사람들은 다른 교회로 옮겼습니다.

융유군(Yung You county)에서는 콜 오웬(Kol Ouen) 그룹이 두 번째로 하삼(Ha Sam)에 작은 건물과 좋은 지도자와 함께 새로운 식민지를 세웠습니다. 콜 오웬(Kol Ouen) 자체는 지금 약하지만, 그 식민지는 성장하고 있습니다.
