CLIPPINGS FROM OCTOBER REPORTS.

FROM one house a servant, a little slave girl, came once a week, always saying “Please bring your books.” Once we arrived while the women were eating their afternoon meal, but they quickly finished, and after calling the neighbors, gathered in the room to read and study. One busy Martha waited to put away rice-bowls and chop-sticks, and a neighbor who had not seen the foreigner before began going through the usual list of questions, but both were reprimanded by the old grandmother of the house, who asked if it were not more important at that time to hear about the new doctrine than to wash dishes or gossip.

One home was of the poorest, a tiny mud hut, mud floor and walls, no window, but on the wall was one bright bit of color, a card the boy had received at Sunday-school ; and the woman, proudly pointing to it, said “That was given him for learning the text, and we too have learned it ‘Jesus is the light of the world.’”

The celebration of Buddha’s birthday brought in visitors from many li away. On Sabbath the crowd was so great that no attempt was made to use the church. Mr. Adams conducted an open air service in the court-yard. Few had ever heard the gospel before. The following days were full of opportunities for seed sowing. Books were sold and many listened intelligently to reading and teaching. Two women seventy-five years of age who had walked in one hundred li for a sight-see said they had been well repaid, for not only had they seen the foreigners, but they had heard this strange story of the world’s Savior. One after buying a book said “I will take it home to my sons and I will tell them about this Jesus who died for their sins : but as for me, I am an old, old ignorant woman ; it’s useless for me to try to learn. But it’s good news, and I will tell my household.”

한 집에서 한 하녀, 작은 노예 소녀가 매주 한 번씩 와서 항상 “책을 가져다 주세요”라고 말했습니다. 어느 날 우리가 도착했을 때, 여성들이 오후 식사를 하고 있었지만, 그들은 곧 식사를 마치고 이웃을 부른 후 방에 모여 읽고 공부하기 시작했습니다. 한 바쁜 마르타가 밥그릇과 젓가락을 치우기 위해 기다리고 있었고, 외국인을 처음 본 이웃이 일반적인 질문 목록을 시작했지만, 두 사람 모두 집안의 할머니에게 질책을 받았습니다. 할머니는 그들에게 “그 당시 새로운 교리를 듣는 것이 접시를 씻거나 잡담하는 것보다 더 중요하지 않느냐”고 물었습니다.

 

한 가정은 가장 가난한 집으로, 작은 흙 오두막이었고, 흙 바닥과 벽, 창문도 없었지만, 벽에는 한 가지 밝은 색깔의 카드가 있었습니다. 그 카드는 소년이 주일학교에서 받은 것이었습니다. 여자는 자랑스럽게 그 카드를 가리키며 “그것은 그가 구절을 외운 대가로 받은 것이며, 우리도 ‘예수는 세상의 빛이다’라는 것을 배웠습니다”라고 말했습니다.

 

부처님 생일 축제는 멀리서 온 방문객들을 불러모았습니다. 주일에는 인파가 너무 많아 교회를 사용할 수 없었습니다. Mr. Adams는 마당에서 야외 예배를 진행했습니다. 그곳에서 복음을 들어본 적이 없는 사람들이 많았습니다. 다음 날들은 씨를 뿌릴 기회로 가득 차 있었습니다. 책들이 팔리고 많은 사람들이 읽기와 가르침을 경청했습니다. 75세의 두 여성이 백 리를 걸어 관광을 하러 왔다며, 그들은 잘 보답받았다고 말했습니다. 왜냐하면 그들은 외국인을 봤을 뿐만 아니라 세상의 구세주에 대한 이상한 이야기도 들었기 때문입니다. 한 여자는 책을 사면서 “이 책을 집에 가져가서 내 아들들에게 예수님이 그들의 죄를 위해 죽으신 이야기를 전하겠다. 하지만 나는 늙고 무지한 여자라서 배우려고 해도 소용이 없다. 하지만 좋은 소식이니, 집안 사람들에게 전하겠다”고 말했습니다.
