CLIPPINGS FROM OCTOBER REPORTS.

THE deliverance of the Council as to proper age for marriage has had a perceptible effect on the Koreans and several are still waiting to come of age who would have married too soon if the missionary had consented. At three weddings where I was asked to officiate the contracting parties were of proper age, and one girl of 18 was married to a youth of 21. This bride was peculiar not only in that she was an old maid from a Korean view point, but also in that she was not so smeared over with paint as to be unrecognizable, but just came with her own face ; and also no sool was provided for the guests, but tae instead.

A half dozen men have this year left off the use of tobacco. They are the advance guard, I believe, of an ever growing army. These men had smoked for years, and it was no small struggle for them to give it up ; and it may be regarded as a mark of growth in grace. Every body smokes in Korea and these are marked men.

The group at Nam Chang by hard work have provided themselves with a church building which cost them $32. besides many days’ work. The houses that most of the.se people live in could be bought for eight to twelve dollars, and this must be remembered to appreciate what they have done.

이사회에서 결혼 적정 연령에 대한 결정은 한국인들에게 뚜렷한 영향을 미쳤고, 몇몇 사람들은 선교사가 동의하지 않았다면 너무 일찍 결혼했을 사람들이 여전히 성년이 될 때까지 기다리고 있습니다. 제가 주례를 맡은 세 번의 결혼식에서 계약 당사자들은 적정 연령에 이르렀고, 18세의 신부가 21세의 청년과 결혼했습니다. 이 신부는 한국의 시각에서 볼 때 노처녀일 뿐만 아니라, 화장으로 알아보지 못할 정도가 아니라 본연의 얼굴로 나타났고, 손님들을 위해 술(sool)이 아닌 차(tae)를 제공했습니다.

올해 담배 사용을 중단한 남자가 여섯 명 있습니다. 이들은 점점 증가하고 있는 군대의 선봉이라고 생각합니다. 이들은 수년간 담배를 피웠으며, 이를 끊는 것은 결코 쉬운 일이 아니었습니다. 이는 신앙의 성장의 한 표식으로 볼 수 있습니다. 한국에서는 모두가 담배를 피우고 있으므로, 이들은 두드러진 인물들입니다.

남창(Nam Chang)의 공동체는 열심히 일하여 $32의 비용으로 교회 건물을 마련했습니다. 이들은 대부분 8~12달러에 구입할 수 있는 집에 살고 있다는 점을 고려할 때, 그들이 이룬 성과는 더욱 의미가 있습니다.
