DR. BROWN’S FIRST KOREAN MEETING.

Our first meeting with the Korean Christians was equally impressive to us. The trip across the narrow strait between Japan and Korea was decidedly rough. We had crossed the Pacific with such comfort that we had fondly imagined ourselves pretty good sailors. But that comparatively insignificant little passage of seventeen hours brought us to grief. The winds and tides that alternately sweep back and forth between the Japan and Eastern seas usually keep the Korean Strait in an agitated state ; and this time a recent storm had stirred up a furious sea. All night our little Japanese steamer pitched and rolled through the assaulting waves, while we -

Well, I told the “boy” to call us an hour before reaching Fusan. He smiled assent and called us ten minutes before instead of sixty. Hastily tumbling out of our berths we jumped into a waiting sampan, with the hospitable missionaries who had already boarded the steamer. As it was already nearly half past ten o'clock, there was no time for breakfast nor had we appetite for it. So we proceeded at once to the dispensary building where the Korean Christians had for some time been awaiting us, troops of them meeting us at the foot of the hill and escorting us up the road. The seasickness from which we had just risen was not the best preparation for speaking. But after a felicitous address of welcome by one of the Koreans, interpreted for me by Dr. Irvin, a hundred voices rose in a song of praise. Such congregational singing. It was so hearty and yet so truly worshipful that it was a physical and spiritual tonic. But not a line could I understand till suddenly I caught the words: “Jesus, Hallelujah.” There being no Korean equivalents for them, the missionaries had taught the people to use the terms so familiar to us. We forgot our sea-sickness as those wondrous words sounded in our ears. I could have had no more inspiring theme and so I preached on the meaning of “Jesus, Hallelujah.”

I have since journeyed far from Fusan and have seen many places and people. But still lives in my vision the little brick building on the hill overlooking the bay with worshiping Koreans sitting oriental fashion on the floor. I can see their faces light up as I spoke to them of Jesus as our revelation of the love of God, Jesus as our Saviour from sin, Jesus as our Friend and King, Jesus as the Giver of such peace and joy that next to the name that is above every other name there is no word so appropriate for the true disciple as “Hallelujah.” Even as I write I seem to hear the unison of those Korean voices as in glad response to my closing request they joined with me in repeating the words, “Jesus, Hallelujah,” and then the reverent petition of their leader as he prayed for us all while the white-robed worshipers bowed with their faces to the floor.

우리의 첫 한국 기독교인들과의 만남은 매우 인상적이었습니다. 일본과 한국 사이의 좁은 해협을 건너는 여정은 결코 순조롭지 않았습니다. 우리는 태평양을 그렇게 편안하게 건넜기에, 자신들이 꽤 괜찮은 선원이라고 착각했습니다. 그러나 비교적 사소한 이 17시간의 항해는 우리에게 큰 고생을 안겼습니다. 일본 해와 동해 사이를 오가는 바람과 조수는 대개 한국 해협을 동요 상태로 유지하는데, 이번에는 최근의 폭풍이 거센 파도를 일으켰습니다. 밤새 우리 작은 일본 증기선은 강한 파도 속에서 요동쳤고, 우리는—

나는 “소년”에게 부산에 도착하기 한 시간 전에 우리를 깨우라고 했습니다. 그는 고개를 끄덕이며 대신 10분 전, 즉 60분이 아닌 10분 전에 깨웠습니다. 우리는 급히 침대에서 일어나 대기 중인 뱃사공의 배에 뛰어올랐고, 이미 배에 올라탄 친절한 선교사들과 함께 했습니다. 이미 시계가 10시 반을 거의 지나고 있었기 때문에 아침식사를 할 시간도 없었고, 식욕도 없었습니다. 그래서 우리는 곧장 한국 기독교인들이 우리를 오랫동안 기다리고 있던 진료소로 향했습니다. 그들은 언덕 기슭에서 우리를 맞이하고 길을 따라 안내해 주었습니다. 우리는 이제 막 바다멀미에서 벗어났지만, 그 상태는 연설을 하기에는 최악의 준비상태였습니다. 그러나 한 한국인이 해주신 환영 인사에 이어, 어빈 박사(Dr. Irvin)가 통역해 주신 덕분에 백여 명의 목소리가 함께 찬양의 노래를 불렀습니다. 그들의 합창은 그렇게 열정적이면서도 진정한 경배로 가득 차 있어, 육체적으로나 영적으로 큰 힘을 주었습니다. 그러나 나는 그들이 부른 가사 한 줄도 이해할 수 없었습니다. 그러다 문득 “예수, 할렐루야”라는 말을 듣게 되었습니다. 한국어에 해당하는 단어가 없었기에, 선교사들이 우리에게 익숙한 용어를 가르쳐준 것이었습니다. 그 경이로운 단어들이 귀에 울리자 우리는 바다 멀미를 잊었습니다. 나는 더 이상 감동적인 주제가 없다고 느끼며 “예수, 할렐루야”의 의미에 대해 설교했습니다.

이후 나는 부산(Fusan)을 떠나 많은 곳과 사람들을 보았습니다. 그러나 여전히 내 마음에 남아 있는 것은, 만경창파를 바라보는 언덕 위의 작은 벽돌 건물과 그 바닥에 동양식으로 앉아 경배하는 한국인들의 모습입니다. 그들에게 하나님의 사랑의 계시로서의 예수, 죄로부터 구원해 주시는 예수, 친구이자 왕으로서의 예수, 그리고 “모든 이름 중에 가장 귀한 이름”에 이어 진정한 제자에게 가장 적합한 단어인 “할렐루야”를 주시는 예수에 대해 이야기할 때, 그들의 얼굴이 빛나는 것을 볼 수 있었습니다. 내가 글을 쓰는 지금도, 그 한국인들의 목소리가 함께 나의 마지막 요청에 기쁜 반응으로 “예수, 할렐루야”라는 말을 반복하는 것처럼 들리는 듯합니다. 그리고 흰 옷을 입은 경배자들이 얼굴을 바닥에 대고 있을 때, 그들의 지도자가 우리 모두를 위해 기도하는 경건한 요청이 들리는 듯합니다.
